Lead Carpenter, Residential Remodeling
About B&C Enterprises:
B&C Enterprises is a design and build remodeling company established in 1995, running residential and
commercial projects across Chicagoland. We remodel kitchens, whole homes, windows, trim, and
everything between, much of it in occupied homes on a time and materials basis. The company runs on
numbers: every job carries estimated hours posted on the wall, a kickoff before work starts, daily logs,
and weekly performance measures used to help people, never to punish them.
Position Summary:
We are hiring an elite Lead Carpenter to serve as the working jobsite leader on our residential
remodeling projects. This person is the eyes, ears, and hands of the superintendent on the jobsite: they
run the job, lead the crew, keep production at standard, and represent the company to the client every
day. This is a leadership seat filled by a master craftsman, not a labor seat. When the superintendent is
elsewhere, the job runs exactly as well as if he were standing on it. That is the bar for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
• Run the assigned jobsite as the working leader when the superintendent is not present. Open the
day with a plan, keep the crew producing all day, close the day with the site, the log, and the client
in good order.
• Perform carpentry at the highest level of craftsmanship, with a specialty in interior trim and
window installation. This is a working position and the lead never fully steps away from the tools.
• Supervise a crew of carpenters and helpers. Assign and explain tasks, set the pace, inspect the work,
and hold the crew accountable for performance, actions, and appearance.
• Make remodeling decisions on your feet. Open a wall, assess what is behind it, decide the next step,
sequence around mechanicals, and keep the job alive while answers come.
• Delegate and coordinate. Know when to call for an electrician, a plumber, or ten sheets of drywall,
and have trades, material, and inspections lined up before the work needs them.
• Read plans and work only from the current version. Confirm scope against the estimate and flag
discrepancies to the superintendent the day they appear.
• Manage the job to its numbers. Know the estimated labor hours posted for the job and manage the
crew to beat them.
• Follow the change order rule. Identified changes get written and approved before the work is
performed, every time.
• Communicate daily with the superintendent and clearly and professionally with clients in their homes. Participate in job meetings and walkthroughs.
• Own jobsite safety, cleanliness, security, and protection from the elements. Submit daily logs. Maintain first aid readiness on site.
• Mentor rising carpenters and apprentices by demonstration and direct teaching. We run an internship pipeline and our leads grow people.
Required Qualifications:
• Ten or more years of hands on carpentry experience, the majority in residential remodeling. Remodeling is the craft this seat demands; a background limited to new construction does not fit it.
• Mastery of both rough and finish carpentry, with elite interior trim and proficient, clean, correct
window installation.
• Proven experience leading crews and running jobs, not only working on them. References who will
confirm it.
• Strong field judgment and exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
• Clear spoken and written communication with managers, trade partners, and homeowners.
• Ability to self-manage across competing priorities and keep a job moving.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites across the region.
• Own a professional set of hand tools and standard power tools in good condition, including a circular saw, drills, levels, and finish carpentry tools.
• Working knowledge of jobsite safety practices and OSHA standards.
Physical Requirements:
• Standing, walking, and working on your feet for the large majority of the day.
• Climbing ladders and scaffolding, balancing, kneeling, crouching, and working overhead.
• Regularly lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasionally more with assistance.
• Working in occupied homes and in active construction conditions year-round.
Preferred, Not Required:
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
• Range across additional trades such as welding, millwork, or cabinet shop experience.
• Estimating literacy, meaning the ability to read an estimate and understand how the hours were
built.
• Experience training or mentoring apprentices.
Compensation and What We Offer:
• Top of market pay for the right person. Our philosophy is simple: to have the best, we pay for the
best.
• For a proven lead, we target total cash compensation in the range of the high-$30s to low-$40s per
hour, or the equivalent of roughly $90,000 a year for a full schedule, structured to fit the candidate.
We benchmark against prevailing Chicagoland rates and set out to beat them.
• Health insurance and 401(k).
• A performance incentive program rolling out company-wide.
• A full pipeline of work: multiple active jobs today and a growing backlog behind them.
• A genuine leadership seat with a superintendent who wants to hand jobs over, not hover over them.
Hiring Process:
We do not hire from interviews alone, because interviews tell us very little about a carpenter. The process is: resume and reference screen, a short conversation, then a paid working session of about four hours in the field alongside one of our lead superintendents. That session is a walkthrough and working interview conducted under a signed single-day liability waiver; it is not deployed labor. Every hire on the labor side carries a 90-day trial period, which is standing company policy communicated up front.
How to Apply:
Apply through the careers page at bcentinc.com/careers, call the office at (847) 930-5859
(Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm), or visit us at 2482 Technology Drive, Elgin, IL 60124.
This search is our current top priority; applicants receive same-day or next-day feedback.
